Milestones of Autonomous Mathematics Research
Every advance in contest mathematics or AI-assisted resolution of a conjecture gets heralded as the advent of superintelligence, yet most non-mathematicians would struggle to name a single milestone between “acing math olympiads” and “solving Millennium prize problems.” Now is the time for mathematicians to define for the world what meaningful progress actually looks like.
This workshop will produce a document of milestones across categories of mathematical reasoning — problem solving, conjecturing, exposition, generalization, and more — each graded on a 10-point scale from undergrad to superhuman. Published and officiated by ICARM.
Logistics
Pebblebed Ventures, 1417 15th Street, San Francisco. Nearest parking is Mission Bartlett Garage (20-min walk). Breakfast is served at 8, morning sessions run 9–12, lunch is provided, and afternoon sessions pick up at 1. No scheduled programming past 5, but the venue stays open into the evening. Questions? Reach Elliot at elliot@principialabs.org.
Schedule
Pre-workshop: Access will be provided to several frontier math models. Familiarity with their relative strengths and weaknesses will be crucial throughout.
Day 1: Lightning talks, benchmarking discussion, establishing skill categories, forming teams.
Day 2: Focused teamwork developing 10 milestone levels within each skill.
Day 3: Cross-team calibration, feedback, final drafts, closing by 5.
Days 4–5 (hybrid): Online dry-run evaluation of frontier models against the draft.
Local Recommendations
The venue is in the heart of the Mission. A few places worth knowing:
Food: Flour + Water is great for a nicer dinner — reserve ahead. Tartine Manufactory has some of the best bread in the world and is a 10-minute walk. El Farolito and La Taqueria are both incredible burritos. Panchita’s #3 for Salvadoran pupusas.
Coffee: Sightglass and Ritual Coffee on Valencia are both about 15 minutes on foot. Tartine Manufactory also does excellent coffee if you’re already there.
Drinks: Standard Deviant is a 5-minute walk — great local brewery with an indoor beer garden. Zeitgeist (Valencia & Duboce) for pitchers in the beer garden if the weather’s cooperating — expect a more punk-rock vibe. El Rio (Mission & Cesar Chavez) has a big backyard patio and is an institution.
